Whenever God gives or does not give something to someone, they do so with thought and purpose, which we humans often do not understand and complain about the shortcomings. In this article, I am going to share a story that clearly explains how to understand whatever we receive...
People are often told to express gratitude for whatever they receive from God, but they don't do that; instead, they always complain about what they haven't received. In doing so, they don't value the things they have, which could prove to be very valuable for them. Let's understand this through a story...
According to a mythological tale, once Narad Muni was wandering around and reached the earthly realm. There, he first visited a poor neighborhood, where he asked a poor man about his well-being. The man, in his distress, pleaded, "I am in great suffering. Please help me and convey my request to God so that I can be freed from this hellish life." Narad saw that the man was indeed in great trouble and was barely surviving. So, Narad promised to convey his message to Narayan. After meeting the poor man, Narad Muni went to a rich area. There, he also inquired about a wealthy man's well-being. The rich man, in a complaining tone, said, "Narad Ji, you are aware of everything. Please tell God to do something good for me. I have everything, but no happiness." Narad Ji assured him as well. As Narad Ji was leaving, he met some pretentious people disguised as monks on the way. Narad Ji asked about their well-being too. The pretenders said, "You are enjoying the bliss of heaven. Give us a chance to experience it once." After gathering everyone's news, Narad Ji returned to Vishnulok.
As soon as he returned to Vishnulok, Narad Ji narrated everything to Lord Vishnu. On this, Lord Vishnu explained that the man who was crying about his poverty had been endowed with all kinds of qualities. He has strength and intelligence. He can use his intellect and hard work to improve his and his family's situation, but he is waiting for some divine power to help him. Therefore, he is responsible for his condition. He sees only his poverty, not his abilities. He complains about the situation, but he is relying on fate instead of trying to change it himself.
About the wealthy man, Lord Vishnu said that he was given more wealth so that he could share his excess with the poor, but he kept his wealth to himself. Therefore, he is not at peace. Those pretentious monks want to achieve happiness by exploiting others. They can never experience the bliss of heaven because they are resorting to sin for the sake of comfort instead of doing good deeds.
