Why do Shia mourn in Muharram? Know the full story of Karbala

According to the Islamic calendar, the new year begins with the month of Muharram. This month is very sad for Shia Muslims. Whenever there is talk of Muharram, the first mention is made of Karbala. The battle of Karbala took place in Tarikh-e-Islam, about 1400 years ago. This war was fought for justice against oppression. Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and 72 of his companions were martyred in this war. That is why it is said that Islam is alive after every Karbala.

Where Islam originated, there was a period of a ruler named Muawiya at some distance from Medina. After the death of Muawiya, his son Yazid got a chance to sit on the royal throne as the royal heir. There was so much fear of Emperor Yazid in the hearts of the people that people used to tremble in the name of Yazid. After the death of Prophet Muhammad, Yazid wanted to run Islam in his own way. For which Yazid asked Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, to follow him and to accept himself as his caliph. Yazid felt that if Imam Hussain accepted him as his caliph, then he would be able to rule over Islam and the followers of Islam.

This was not acceptable to Hussain at all and Hussain refused to accept Yazid as his Caliph. Hussain's refusal to Yazid could not be tolerated and he started plotting to eliminate Hussain. Along with not listening to Yazid, Hussein also decided to leave Medina, the city of his maternal grandfather, Prophet Mohammad. When Hussain reached Karbala on the second date of Muharram, he was accompanied by a small Lashkar, which included a total of 72 people ranging from women to small children. Meanwhile, near Karbala, Yazid surrounded the convoy of Imam Hussain and forced him to consider himself as the Caliph. But Hussein refused to accept Yazid as caliph.

After Hussain reached Karbala, on the 7th of Muharram, all the things that Imam Hussain had to eat and drink were all over. Seeing this, Yazid also stopped the water of Hussain's Lashkar. From the 7th to the 10th of Muharram, Imam Hussain and the people of his convoy remained hungry and thirsty. But Imam Hussain kept on acting patiently and kept postponing the war.

Yazid's atrocities were increasing with each passing day. After seeing this, Imam Hussain asked the people present in his convoy to leave. But no one left there except Hussain. On the 10th of Muharram, Yazid's army attacked Hussain and his companions. Yazid was very powerful. Yazid had weapons, daggers, swords. Whereas there were only 72 people in Hussain's convoy.

During this war, on the 10th of Muharram, Yazid's army brutally killed Imam Hussain and his companions. Among them, Hussain's 6-month-old son Ali Asghar, 18-year-old Ali Akbar and his 7-year-old nephew Qasim (Hasan's son) were also martyred. This is the reason why the 10th of Muharram is the most important, which is called Roz-e-Ashura.

After killing Hussain, Yazid first set fire to the homes of Bait supporters. After this, the family members of the people present in the convoy were made their prisoners. Imam Hussain and his family members were martyred on the 10th of Muharram while fighting in the interest of Islam in Balla. Remembering the same sacrifice of Hussain, on the 10th of Muharram, Muslims express grief in different ways. Shia people mourn to express their sorrow, recite Majlis.

As soon as the moon of Muharram is seen, people of all Shia community mourn for 2 months and 8 days. During this, they do not wear red ruddy and shining clothes.
