Sisters do Tilak for brother's long life :
On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters wish their brother for his long life by applying tilak and giving gifts. In return, the brother promises to protect his sister. It is especially auspicious for a brother to have food at his sister's house on this day. In Mithila city, this festival is still known as Yamadvitiya. On this day, a paste is applied on both the hands of brothers after grinding the rice. Also in some places there is a tradition of applying vermilion in the hands of the brother.
Mythological :
According to a mythological belief about Bhai Dooj, Yamuna fasted on this day for the long life of her brother Yamraj and fed him Annakoot food. According to the legend, Lord Yama had appeared to his sister on this day. Yama's sister Yamuna was very anxious to meet her brother. Yamuna was very pleased to see her brother. Yamuna was pleased and welcomed her brother a lot. Yama was pleased and granted him a boon that on this day if both brothers and sisters bathe together in the Yamuna river, then they will get salvation. For this reason, bathing with brothers and sisters in this Yamuna river is of great importance. Apart from this, Yama took a promise from his brother that every brother should go to his sister's house on this day. Since then the practice of celebrating Bhai Dooj is going on.
