King Ashwapati of Madra country had no children. In the desire to have children, the king did severe penance for many years. Pleased with this penance, Mother Savitri gave the king a boon of a stunning daughter. Since this girl was born out of the compassion of Mother Savitri, she was named Savitri. When Princess Savitri grew up, it was becoming very difficult for her to find a suitable groom. Ultimately, the king sent Savitri along with a minister to Tapovan in search of a groom.

When Narada predicted Satyavan's death 

Savitri chose Satyavan, the son of King Dyumatsena, as the bridegroom. King Dyumtsen's royal lessons had been snatched away and he started living in the forest. When Savitri returned to the palace after choosing Satyavan, Narada's prediction surprised everyone. He said that Satyavan would die only after 12 years of marriage. Hearing this, the king asked Savitri to choose another groom, but Savitri refused.

Yamraj started walking with Satyavan's life

Eventually Savitri got married to Satyavan and she went to the forest to live with her husband and mother-in-law. Keeping in mind the prophecy of Narada, when the time of Satyavan's death came near, Savitri started fasting. One day when Satyavan was chopping wood in the forest, he died and Yamraj started taking his life away.

Savitri asked for 3 boons from Yamraj

When Yamraj was taking Satyavan's life, Savitri also came after him. Savitri did not turn back even after Yamraj's explanation. Yamraj was pleased to see his loyalty and asked Savitri to ask for three boons. Then Savitri asked for eyes for mother-in-law, lost royal text and a boon of hundred sons. Yamraj accepted all the demands and granted a boon to Savitri.

Yamraj was pleased with Savitri's cleverness

When Yamraj started taking Satyavan's life after giving these three boons, Savitri again started coming after him. This time Yamraj got angry. Then Savitri said to Yamraj, 'You have given me the boon of 100 sons and you are taking my husband's life away. How will this boon be successful without a husband.' Yamraj was pleased with this cleverness of Savitri. He immediately freed Satyavan's life. After this Savitri went under the vat with Satyavan and Satyavan came alive. 

When Savitri returned with her husband, she saw that her mother-in-law's eyes had also returned and her lost secret text was also found back.
