When people hear the word “self-realization,” it often conjures images of a yogi meditating in a Himalayan cave. However, I want to address the practical side of self-realization that you can experience in your everyday life. Talking about mystical experiences might detach you from the reality you live in. If you start believing in realities beyond your experience, you lose your grounding in the present reality.
Sadly, spirituality and religion have often been misunderstood. Many believe that God will take care of all aspects of their lives—food, health, survival, and business. But this reliance can be disabling rather than enabling. Instead of seeking self-knowledge in mystical ways or another dimension, let's focus on a practical approach to understanding yourself.
Consider this: if you want to drive a motorcycle or car, the more you understand the machine, the better control and freedom you have. Whether it's a car, computer, cell phone, or even relationships with family and friends, the more you know about them, the better you can handle them. This principle applies to everything in life.
Why not apply the same principle to yourself? The more you know about this piece of life you call “myself,” the better your grasp and ability to handle it. Self-realization is essentially about knowing yourself in a better way than you currently do. You may be aware of your thoughts, personality, and emotions, and perhaps you've even been psychoanalyzed. Yet, you may still not understand the nature of your life—how it happens, where it comes from, where it goes, and what its true nature is. Without this understanding, you handle your life by accident.
Living life accidentally makes you a potential calamity. Whether you become one or not, living without self-awareness leads to anxiety and fear. To live life with ease, you must know this piece of life. Without ease, joy is unattainable. When joy is absent, existential questions arise, such as “To be or not to be?” This is not an intelligent question but a result of not realizing the immensity of being human.
Self-realization is not an esoteric concept meant for yogis in caves; it is essential for everyone. To live life with ease and joy, you must explore and understand yourself. Self-realization is not a choice; it is a must.
By understanding and knowing yourself deeply, you gain better control over your life. You can navigate it with ease and joy, free from existential dilemmas. Embrace self-realization as a practical, necessary journey towards understanding and mastering the life within you.
