Mauni Amavasya, a day of immense spiritual significance, is observed on the no-moon day of the Magha month. In 2025, Mauni Amavasya falls on January 29, and millions of devotees will take a holy dip in sacred rivers, believing that this act washes away all sins and grants liberation (moksha). This day is dedicated to silence (maun), self-purification, and ancestral offerings. It is said that on this day, celestial beings reside at the Triveni Sangam, making it the most auspicious occasion for a holy bath, especially during the Kumbh Mela. A sacred fast (vrat) associated with Mauni Amavasya highlights its profound spiritual importance. Let us explore this revered story.
The Vrat Katha of Mauni Amavasya
Once upon a time in Kanchipuri, there lived a Brahmin named Devswami with his wife, Dhanvati. They had seven sons and a daughter named Gunvati. When Gunvati came of age, her father consulted an astrologer to determine an auspicious match for her. The astrologer predicted that she would become a widow soon after marriage. Devswami and Dhanvati were heartbroken and sought a remedy for their daughter’s fate.
The astrologer advised that Gunvati’s destiny could change if a virtuous woman named Soma Dhobin from the island of Singhal performed a special ritual and donated her accrued merits to Gunvati. Determined to save her daughter's future, Devswami sent Gunvati along with her youngest brother on a journey to Singhal.
After traveling for days, they reached the seashore but were unable to cross the vast ocean. Hungry and exhausted, they rested under a Peepal tree, unaware that a family of vultures lived there. The young vultures overheard their conversation and informed their mother. Moved by their plight, the vulture mother decided to help them. She provided them with food and, the next morning, carried them across the sea to Soma Dhobin’s house.
Gunvati, out of gratitude and devotion, began secretly cleaning Soma’s house every morning before anyone woke up. One day, Soma’s daughter-in-law noticed this and informed her. Curious, Soma stayed up all night to uncover the mystery. At dawn, she saw Gunvati sweeping and decorating the courtyard. Touched by her humility, Soma approached her and asked about her story. Gunvati narrated her plight, and Soma, filled with compassion, agreed to accompany her to Kanchipuri.
On the day of Gunvati’s wedding, as the astrologer had foretold, her husband suddenly passed away. Without hesitation, Soma performed a sacred ritual and transferred her accumulated virtues to Gunvati, reviving her husband. However, as a consequence, Soma's own husband and son perished in her absence.
Devastated, Soma rushed home, only to find their lifeless bodies. On her way, she stopped beneath a Peepal tree and performed 108 circumambulations while worshipping Lord Vishnu. Miraculously, the divine blessings revived her husband and son, sparing them from untimely death.
The Divine Blessings of Mauni Amavasya
This legend reinforces the belief that observing Mauni Amavasya with faith, silence, and fasting pleases Lord Vishnu. It is said that those who observe this vrat are blessed with divine protection from misfortunes and receive immense spiritual merit.
Thus, Mauni Amavasya is not just a day of ritualistic observance but a gateway to divine blessings and ultimate liberation. By taking a sacred bath, maintaining silence, and engaging in selfless acts, devotees align themselves with higher spiritual energies, ensuring prosperity and salvation.
